There is no way around this - car insurance is something you need. State auto insurance regulations may require you to obtain some type of insurance coverage. It's also possible that a car financing or leasing company requires coverage, and let's face it, you probably don't want to have thousands of dollars to repair the car, property, or medical costs in the event of an accident.
In short, you buy an insurance policy from an auto insurance company. You pay annual premiums and, if you have an accident, file a claim that covers your financial losses due to the accident.

Getting a good deal on car insurance is all about finding a balance between the coverage you want and the prices that fit your budget. We have analyzed auto insurance rates on a variety of driver profiles to help you find the cheapest auto insurance companies among the top insurers. Please note that the 'Study Rates' shown below are simple averages across a variety of driver profiles. The rates available to you may be higher or lower.
The cheapest car insurance companies
- USAA is the cheapest auto insurance company and offers the lowest auto insurance rates in the country, according to our analysis. This insurer has a low representative rate of only $ 885 per year, which is about $ 300 less than the other cheapest insurance company in our study. USAA has the lowest tuition premiums for almost every driver profile we analyzed, and even when it wasn't the cheapest at all, it wasn't much more expensive than its cheaper competition.
- Geico is the second cheapest auto insurance company, with a study rate of $ 1,168 per year. This is slightly more expensive than the representative USAA price, but is still 17% cheaper than the national average in our analysis. Geico offers some of the lowest tuition fees for almost all driver profiles except those with DUI. This insurance company really sets itself apart from its competitors when we look at the profiles of 25-year-old drivers. Geico's representative rates for these profiles are hundreds of dollars cheaper than those offered by almost all other insurance companies.
- State Farm is the third cheapest auto insurance company in our study. With a representative annual rate of $ 1,234, State Farm is cheaper than the national average. Based on our analysis, this insurance company is an excellent choice for representative profiles with less than excellent driving records. State Farm survey rates are much lower than the national average for profiles with a speeding or accident violation. This insurance company was the cheapest for a DUI profile.
- Travelers are the fourth cheapest car insurance company in our ranking of the cheapest insurance companies. It's still within easy reach of State Farm and Geico, with a representative premium of $ 1,267 per year. Across our range of driver profiles, regardless of age, gender, credit score or driving history, travelers had slightly below average study rates.
- Progressive is the fifth cheapest auto insurance company. Its representative price remains slightly below the average for all companies, with a study premium of $ 1,373. The same is true for most driver profiles, with progressive prices approaching or just below average. Progressive is a great option for a DUI driver profile, with a much lower than average study rate. However, it is among the most expensive with an accident profile.
- American Family is the sixth cheapest auto insurance company, with a study premium of $ 1,391. This is the last auto insurance company with a representative rate below the national average. Like Progressive, American Family stayed near the average among the nine insurers for most of our driver profiles, but drifted toward the cheaper end of profiles with poor driving records.
- Farmers are the seventh cheapest auto insurance company. Their $ 1,682 a year tuition fee is about 20% higher than the representative premium for the American family. It is also two hundred dollars more expensive than the national average. Farmer survey fees are always on the expensive side of all driver profiles (although they are not the most expensive).
- Nationwide is the eighth cheapest auto insurer, and its annual study rate of $ 1,864 is roughly $ 200 more than the farmer's representative price and more than $ 400 higher than the national average. Most doomed: more than twice as expensive nationally as USAA. This auto insurance company is especially expensive for the profiles of 25-year-old drivers, as well as those with a poor driving record. For a profile that contains a DUI, the Nationwide tuition fee is more than $ 4,000 per year, or nearly $ 350 per month.
- Allstate is the most expensive auto insurance company in our study, even if it's just hair. It only costs $ 1,880 to study for this company; it costs about $ 1 more per month more than Nationwide. However, Allstate ultimately takes the dubious crown as the most expensive auto insurance company in our analysis, with rates particularly high for the 35- and 60-year-old driver profiles. Allstate also imposes heavy penalties on profiles of drivers with fair or poor credit.
It is important to note that our data may not include all the states in which each of these companies operates. Study rates for Allstate, Geico, and State Farm are based on reported data for all 50 states and the District of Columbia, while USAA is based on data from 48 states, progressive based on data from 47 states, and nationwide based on data from 43 states and farmers in data from 31, travelers with data from 24 and US relatives with data from 19.
